First Day Icebreakers—For the Whole Year!

1. Assign students to pairs. Every student is required to share a nervous moment with their companion. Ask students to recount their partner's experience as you travel around the room once they have completed their discussion.

2. Using a black marker, trace each student in the class on a roll of paper. Ask kids to write some of their favorite things on one side of their bodies. Conversely, ask pupils to write down their yearly objectives. Additionally, students can embellish and add color to their body outline. After that, discuss and hang up the projects.

3. Use frightening scenarios for team charades! Jot down a number of tense situations (such as taking a plane, meeting a new person, making a speech, etc.) on
Reviews Written by School Library Journal Editors

"You don't want to miss the first day at your new school do you?" asks Mr. Hartwell to Kindergarten-Grade 3 Sarah, who is hiding under her blankets. She answers from under the cover, "I'm not going." He urges her to see all the new friends she would make and remarks on how much she enjoyed her previous school. She sees a classroom where a paper airplane is soaring, a guy is yanking his neighbor's pigtail, and a third is blowing a huge bubble. Sarah eventually stumbles out of bed, eats a small piece of toast, and gets into the automobile, where she falls into her seat thanks to Mr. Hartwell.

"Any child who has just transferred schools or is just not excited to start a new school year will relate to this cleverly illustrated and gripping tale. Sarah Hartwell prepares herself for the worst from the moment she wakes up on that fateful day until she enters the classroom. Love's pen and watercolor pictures lend humor to Sarah's worries, which include being searched by the police if she doesn't show up and dealing with naughty kids. It doesn't seem like Mr. Hartwell's assurances will do much good. The images capture the tense feelings and irrational expectations that newcomers have (the double-page spread depicting a forbidding, prison-like school is absolutely priceless), which culminates in a clever and delightful surprise finale. witty and perceptive."—List of books
Julie Danneberg's book First Day Jitters, with illustrations by Judy Love, is a wonderful companion to Wemberly Worried. We are introduced to a specific Sarah Jane Hartwell in the first few chapters, who is experiencing her own panic episode connected to the first day of school. You can't even see Sarah Jane's face because she is completely hidden behind the covers. Actually, until the very final page of the delightful book, which abruptly offers a cunning and humorous twist, you have no idea what she looks like."— Newsweek
